General Election
A General Election is the election in which federal and state officers, members of Congress and of the general assembly, county and township officers, and other officers appear on the ballot. General Elections are held the 1st Tuesday after the 1st Monday in November of each even-numbered year.
The 2026 General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Polling places will be open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Extended Hours
Extended and Saturday hours are available for voter registration and absentee voting in the Mitchell County Auditor's Office. In addition to regular hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., extended office hours during the 2026 General Election season will be as follows:
- Thursday, September 17th 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Monday, October 19th 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Friday, October 30th 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Satruday, October 31st 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Results will be posted on election night.
Pre-Registration deadline for voter registration closes at 5:00 p.m. Monday, October 19, 2026. Persons wishing to participate in this election who register to voter after October 19 will be required to provide proof of identification (i.e. current and valid photo identification cared with an expiration date), AND proof of residency in their voting precinct, when they go to the polls on election day, or when they request an absentee ballot in-person. Other provisions may also apply. Persons not registered to vote by October 19 should expect a longer processing time at the polls on election day.

Absentee Ballot Request Forms can be submitted on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
Absentee Ballots will be available beginning Wednesday, October 14, for mail and in-person voting.
The Auditor's Office can begin accepting request forms on Tuesday, August 25. The last day an absentee ballot may be mailed to a voter for this election is October 19 until 5:00 p.m. In-person absentee voting in the office of the Mitchell County Auditor closes at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, November 2.
All absentee ballots must be received by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day to be considered on time to be counted.
Candidate Filing Dates
- Partisan County and Township Offices: March 2, 2026 - June 2, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.
- County Ag. Extension, Soil & Water, and Hospital Trustees: By August 26, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.
Candidate Filing Information
County Offices (Attorney, Recorder, and Treasurer)
- No-Party and NPPO Candidates need 50 signatures
County Offices (Supervisor District 1, and Superivsor District 3)
- No-Party and NPPO Candidates need 21 signatures from their respective districts
Township Trustees/Clerk
County Ag. Extension
- Candidates need at least 25 signatures from the extension district
County Soil & Water
- Candidates need at least 25 signatures from the conservation district
Hospital Trustee
- Candidates need at least 50 signatures
